Redwood Bark Beetle: What Bay Area Homeowners Should Watch For
The tallest trees on Earth often host a beetle about the size of a grain of rice within their bark. Known as the redwood bark
When a tree is removed, most tree-care companies make the final cut a few inches above the ground, leaving an unattractive and sometimes hazardous stump in the middle of your residential or commercial property. Although the stump will eventually decay, the process can take years or even decades, and in the meantime, it can attract pests and lower your property’s value. But that’s not a problem when you partner with the experts at Adney Tree Service we offer comprehensive stump grinding services that not only remove the remaining stump but also leave the area ready for whatever project you have planned next.
Our shop sits at 335 Spreckels Drive in Aptos, and Watsonville is about eleven miles southeast, a straight run down Highway 1, usually around twenty minutes. That keeps you close to a local Central Coast crew rather than a company sending a grinder in from an hour away.
Being nearby means we can come assess the stump on short notice, give you a straight estimate, and schedule the grind around your other tree work when it makes sense.
Watsonville is the working heart of the Pajaro Valley, incorporated back in 1868 and full of history you can still see downtown, where Victorian storefronts and homes from the 1880s line the streets. Neighborhoods this old come with big, mature trees, and mature trees eventually come out, leaving stumps behind near century-old houses, sidewalks, and driveways.
Those settings raise the stakes on a leftover stump. As a stump decays next to an old wood-framed home, it becomes a welcome mat for termites, carpenter ants, and other pests you very much don't want near the house. Grinding the stump out removes that habitat before it turns into a problem indoors.
The ground matters too. Much of Watsonville sits on the low, soft soil near the Pajaro River and the Watsonville Sloughs, where roots spread wide and stumps sit in damp earth. Grinding those out cleanly, without leaving a soggy depression behind, takes the right approach.
On an older, tighter lot, a stump wastes space you'd rather use and blocks you from replanting where the tree once stood. Left long enough, it can also hold onto disease that spreads to nearby trees, a real concern in neighborhoods with a dense, connected canopy.
Grinding puts a clean end to all of it. We take the stump below grade, turn it into mulch you can spread or haul off, and leave you level ground ready for whatever comes next. For a Watsonville homeowner, that usually means reclaiming a corner of the yard while keeping pests and pathogens away from the trees and the house you want to protect.
Watsonville's mix of properties adds to the demand. Beyond the old residential neighborhoods, this is a working city with farm edges, commercial lots, and older parcels where a tree has been taken out and the stump simply left. Grinding those out clears the way for new planting, a fence line, paving, or just a clean, safe surface. The chips a grind produces can be spread as mulch or hauled off, whichever you prefer. On the flat valley floor, where lots tend to be open and well used, reclaiming the footprint a stump and its roots occupy makes an immediate, visible difference.
It also spares you the slow route. A big hardwood or eucalyptus stump can sit and rot for a decade or more, drawing wildlife the whole time, so grinding it now is far tidier than waiting it out.
We're in the Pajaro Valley constantly, so Watsonville is a regular stop, not a far-flung service area. We know the old neighborhoods, the soft slough-side ground, and the pests that move into a rotting stump. When we finish a grind here, our name is attached to it in a community where reputation carries, and that keeps our work honest.
While stump grinding isn’t as dangerous as tree pruning or removal, it can still have a significant impact on your property. If the work isn’t done carefully, it can leave unsafe depressions, damage utility lines, or even harm the roots of nearby trees. That’s why it’s essential to hire a stump-grinding service you can trust — a professional team like Adney Tree Service. We’ll take care of all your stump-grinding needs and ensure your property looks as good as new.
Leaving stumps in place can lead to a range of problems, but removing them brings several clear benefits to your property. Some of the most important advantages of professional stump grinding include:
Unfortunately, many homeowners and property managers consider tree stumps to be harmless components of a landscape, which don’t require any action. But in actuality, tree stumps can present a variety of issues, including:
From stinging insects to rats to snakes, all sorts of wildlife can move into an old tree stump. If it’s left unaddressed, the problem can escalate quickly and lead to expensive pest-control issues.
No matter how tall they are, tree stumps almost always pose a serious trip hazard. And while anyone can get hurt by tripping over a stump, young children and older adults are usually at the greatest risk.
It’s tough to make good use of the space around a tree stump. The remaining roots keep you from planting new trees in that spot, and the exposed stump above ground gets in the way of adding features like benches, landscaping elements, or decorations.
Aesthetic preferences may vary, but very few people would call a tree stump attractive. Most homeowners and property managers see them as eyesores that take away from the beauty of the area.
It’s tough to make practical use of the space around a tree stump. The remaining roots prevent you from planting new trees in that area, and the portion of the stump above ground makes it hard to add benches, landscaping features, or other decorative elements.
Some tree species are notorious for sending up new shoots from stumps and root systems. This new growth may appear vigorous, but it’ll rarely exhibit strong branch attachment or sound structure, setting the stage for future problems.

Have more questions about our stump grinding services or stump removal in general? We’ve rounded up some of the most common questions we hear from our clients below.
Grinding a stump that’s already cut generally doesn’t require a tree permit, since the permitting rules apply to removing a living tree, not clearing what’s left after. The picture changes for protected or heritage trees and for anything in the public right-of-way. When there’s any doubt, we’ll help you confirm with the City before we grind.
Maybe not. Stumps in the sidewalk planter strip or right-of-way are often street trees on City property, and those are handled differently from a stump in your own yard. Before assuming it’s yours to deal with, it’s worth sorting out responsibility, and we can point you in the right direction on a street-tree stump.
It doesn’t have to. The low, soft ground near the Pajaro River and the sloughs holds moisture, so we grind and backfill with an eye to drainage rather than leaving a bowl that collects water. Packing the spot properly is the difference between reclaimed ground and a puddle, and on wet Watsonville soil that step matters more than usual.
Yes. Eucalyptus and other big hardwoods around the valley leave wide, dense stumps that a small rental machine can’t touch, and left alone they can sit and rot for a decade while drawing pests. We bring equipment sized for the large ones and take them well below grade.
Grinding leaves a mound of wood chips mixed with soil over a shallow depression where the stump was. It fills easily, usually with the grindings themselves plus a little topsoil, tamped level so you can plant or lay turf. We finish the grade before we leave rather than handing you a raw pit to sort out.
We do. Watsonville is a working city with commercial lots, apartment complexes, and agricultural parcels, and stumps on those need clearing just as much as the ones in backyards. Whether it’s one stump behind a storefront or several along a farm edge, it’s the same job scaled to the site.

Every thing from start to finish was awesome. Sean explained everything very clearly in our first visit and offered to be there when the work started which I appreciated. The guys showed up on time, were exceptionally courteous, did a great job, and the cleanup was perfect. It was almost like they hadn’t been there at all. I also thought the price was very fair. All in all, I would highly recommend!Posted on Google![]()

The entire staff and crew, Sean, Taylor, Gabriel, Dona and two others whose names escape me, all represent the quality of service I received and would rate 5 stars. Everyone was efficient, knowledgeable and performed as expected. Taylor clearly explained how and why he would trim and shape the tree, as well as reasons for leaving some branches needed for the future growth and health of the tree. The crew took great care to lower extremely large branches so as not to damage any of the plantings. They removed pots and anything breakable to a safe area. When completed the yard was clean and the big oak is ready for winter.Posted on Google![]()

I have a gigantic avocado tree that is producing fruit for the first time in the 12 years I’ve been here. It must have been making up for lost time because it was laden with small avocados. I wanted to retain some of the fruit and ensure it keeps producing but it needed pruning badly. Adney Tree Service did an exceptional job with that! Sean came over and sent the quote the same day. The crew was outstanding also. They had me come out and check to see if I was satisfied with the shape, they cleaned the roof, and also cleaned up the yard. Sean came by to check in while the work was going on and called me that evening to make sure I was satisfied. All in all, excellent customer service!Posted on Google![]()

We just had Adney remove a tree, and from start to finish the process was a breeze. All communication was prompt & professional, and the crew was polite & efficient. We did get a less expensive quote from someone else, but decided to go with Adney because we were more confident in their expertise. So glad we did; you definitely get what you pay for! There is no question we will use them again for any future needs.Posted on Google![]()
