Some trees can be removed with little more than a chainsaw and a length of rope to direct their fall, while others are more challenging and require the help of a climber or bucket lift to lower them safely to the ground. But trees that are exceptionally large, hazardous, or located in tight spaces may require even more elaborate tools and techniques; some require the assistance of a crane. However, while crane-assisted removals are helpful for protecting people, property, and landscapes, they are inherently more complex than standard removals, which limits the number of tree companies offering them. During a normal tree removal job, a climber ascends the tree (or accesses the top with an aerial lift), attaches a few ropes to control pieces as they’re lowered, and then begins cutting the tree into small sections. But crane-assisted removals are a bit more complicated and typically involve the following steps:
Most tree removals can be carried out with relatively little heavy equipment, aside from an aerial lift (and some removals don’t even require that). But there are situations — such as the ones detailed below — that require a crane’s help to keep the nearby people, structures, and landscaping safe.
Truly massive trees may simply not be feasible to remove without the help of a crane, which can lower large sections safely and while under control.
Dead or brittle trees are often too dangerous to climb, which means that a crane will be necessary to safely dismantle them.
Structural issues, such as weak branch unions or large codominant stems (“twin” trunks), may make a tree hazardous to climb.
Even if they’re not yet dead, trees that are suffering from advanced disease or decay may not be safe to remove without the assistance of a crane.
Trees that are located in small backyards or similar areas that are inaccessible by other equipment may need to be removed with the help of a crane.
In the interest of safety, cranes may be necessary for removing trees that hang across buildings, houses, or high-traffic areas.
While trees can often be removed carefully and in small pieces, some clients prefer the additional measure of safety cranes offer.
