Capitola has a longer story than almost any beach town in the state. It started as Soquel Landing, a shipping wharf at the mouth of Soquel Creek, and opened as Camp Capitola on the Fourth of July in 1874. That makes it the oldest seaside resort on the Pacific Coast, a title it’s held for more than 140 years. Residents voted to incorporate as a city in 1949.
You can still read that history in the layout. Capitola Village tucks into a low spot where Soquel Creek meets the bay, with colorful cottages and hotels climbing the bluffs on either side. The famous Venetian Court has stood on the sand since 1924. This is a town of small lots, old homes, and tight streets, packed into less than two square miles right against the water.
