You might count on your trees for shade, privacy, and even a bump in your property value, but they’re counting on you just as much. If you want them to stay healthy and keep delivering all those benefits, they need consistent care and the right resources to grow. That’s where a trusted team of tree-care professionals comes in. The right crew can help your trees stay strong, resist pests and disease, and grow at a healthy pace. And if you’re in Aptos, you don’t have to search far for that kind of support: Simply contact the experts at Adney Tree Service!
Our shop sits at 335 Spreckels Drive, right in the middle of Aptos. Most tree companies list your town on a map and drive in from somewhere up the highway. We don’t. When you call us, the crew is already here, a few minutes from your street.
That closeness changes how the work goes. We can swing by for an estimate the same week instead of penciling you in around a long commute. Our trucks and chippers stage nearby, so storm calls and emergencies get a faster response. And because we live and work in the same town, we drive past our finished jobs all the time. That keeps us honest in a way an out-of-area outfit never has to think about.
Aptos sits in a rare spot. Its southwest edge meets Monterey Bay, and the northeast climbs straight into the Santa Cruz Mountains. That squeeze between water and ridge shapes almost everything that grows here.
The name comes from the Ohlone and means “the people” or “meeting of two streams.” For roughly forty years, from the 1880s into the 1920s, this canyon was logged hard for its coast redwoods. When the saws stopped, the forest grew back. Today the Forest of Nisene Marks protects more than 10,000 acres of that second- and third-growth redwood right at the town’s back door.
Most of Aptos as you know it went up later, during the 1960s boom. Cabrillo College, the Rancho Del Mar center, and one subdivision after another filled in during those years. Builders set homes onto wooded hillsides and left the big trees standing. Sixty years on, those redwoods, Monterey pines, and coast live oaks tower over roofs, decks, and power lines across Seacliff, Rio del Mar, Seascape, and the village.
A tall, mature canopy on a steep, wet lot is a lot to manage. The winter of 2023 made that plain. Back-to-back atmospheric rivers soaked the hills, and trees came down across the county, including here in Aptos, where crews cleared toppled trunks off streets like Escalona Drive. Nisene Marks itself closed for months from fallen trees and slides.
Those storms return in some form every wet year. When the soil is saturated and the wind picks up, top-heavy redwoods and pines are often the first to go. A tree that suddenly leans more on a slope is a warning worth acting on early, not after it lands on something.
Our coast live oaks carry a separate threat. Sudden Oak Death is active throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains, and it can hollow out a mature oak from the inside before the crown shows much sign of trouble. Catching a struggling oak early gives you options a dead one won’t.
Add tall pines growing into utility lines on older streets, and you have real reasons to keep a certified arborist involved rather than waiting for a limb to make the decision for you.
We shop where you shop and drive the same roads every day. In a town this size, word travels fast, and a reputation gets built one clean job at a time. That suits us fine. When your trees need attention, you’ll be working with a local team that plans to be here for the long haul.
Aptos has plenty of tree-care companies, but that doesn’t mean they all measure up. Some are focused on quick jobs and fast cash, not on what your trees actually need. When that happens, your trees don’t just miss out on proper care — they can end up damaged. What you really want is a reliable, high-quality tree-care provider led by an ISA-certified arborist, someone who treats every tree with the attention it deserves. That’s exactly what you’ll find with Adney Tree Service.
Unlike some other tree companies, which are essentially only interested in removing trees, Adney Tree Service is a full-service operation that provides all of the tree-care services you may need. From planting your new saplings to removing trees that’ve reached the end of their lifespan, we do it all. Some of the most popular services we provide clients in the Central Coast region are detailed below.
Planting new trees on your property is always exciting, but if you want those trees to truly take root and flourish, they need to be installed by arboricultural professionals — like the crew at Adney Tree Service. We know how different species behave, what they require, and the science that goes into proper tree installation.
Trees may commonly live for decades or even centuries, but they all eventually die or become hazardous and require removal. When that day comes, our tree-removal experts can help remove the ailing tree safely and efficiently while protecting your property.
Adney Tree Service is led by an ISA-certified arborist, which sets us apart from the all-too-common “guy with a chainsaw” operations in the area. Because of that expertise, we’re able to offer solid guidance, detailed assessments, and accurate diagnostic services to help keep your trees healthy and thriving.
Whether you need a group of small trees trimmed to restore sidewalk access or you have a massive eucalyptus that needs structural pruning to remain safe, we can help. Equipped with the necessary tools, equipment, and knowledge, our tree-care experts will prune or trim your trees with precision.
Cabling and bracing are useful techniques arborists use to support weak branch unions, improve safety, and save trees that might otherwise need to come down. But these aren’t services you’ll get from a standard tree company — they require an arborist-led team, like the one at Adney Tree Service.
Wildfires are always a potential threat in Aptos, CA, but by maintaining clear, defensible spaces near structures, you can help protect your structures and property. Adney Tree Service can help in this regard and ensure you’re prepared for fire season.
People tend to focus on the way trees grow in height, but most species also expand horizontally with time, potentially resulting in reduced access or maintenance issues. But our tree-trimming professionals can quickly and efficiently trim your trees to provide proper clearance.
Bad weather has a way of knocking trees down at the worst possible moments — late at night, on a weekend, right when you’re least prepared for it. Luckily, when you call Adney Tree Service, that timing isn’t an issue. We provide emergency tree service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
It’s important to take action at the first sign of trouble to give your trees the best chance of thriving. But unfortunately, homeowners and commercial property managers are often unfamiliar with the clues that indicate trouble is brewing. If you notice any of the following signs or symptoms, contact the professionals at Adney Tree Service immediately to arrange for an on-site assessment.
Cracked trunks or branches are a true emergency because they’re signs the tree is already starting to fail. That said, a crack doesn’t always mean the whole tree has to come down. In many cases, we can stabilize it with cabling or bracing to protect the tree and keep it safe.
Large hollows or cavities may provide a bit of charm to some trees, but they’re frequently associated with significant decay and structural instability. You’ll need a certified arborist to assess the tree to determine if it is likely stable or requires some type of mitigation.
Mushrooms or conks growing on a tree’s trunk, branches, or roots are signs of fungal activity and internal decay. Sadly, this type of problem is almost never something you can fix, so it’s important to bring in a certified arborist to assess the tree and determine whether removal is necessary.
When the soil surrounding a tree’s trunk starts lifting or rising above grade, it indicates that the roots or soil are failing. This is an immediate safety hazard, which should prompt you to keep the area clear and contact an arborist for an immediate assessment.
Sometimes trees naturally lean or grow at an angle, especially when they’re competing for sunlight. But if a tree suddenly starts leaning more than it used to, that change can signal real instability — and in many cases, that means removal may be the safest option.
Trees naturally shed branches from time to time, but when trees drop large branches (or a large number of branches over a short period of time), it can indicate problems with pests, disease, or decay. Such trees are often hazardous and should be inspected immediately by a certified arborist.
Dead or dying branches in a tree’s canopy can point to many different issues — disease, insect activity, or even poor airflow. It doesn’t automatically mean the tree is in grave danger, but the only way to know what’s really going on is to have a certified arborist take a look.
Most trees can survive minor insect infestations, but by the time pest attacks become noticeable, the tree may be in danger. So, contact the professionals at Adney Tree Service anytime you see insects or signs of insect activity (such as boreholes or frass) on your trees.
A lot of foliar tree diseases tend to be mild and don’t usually threaten a tree’s long-term health. Still, there are exceptions — and even the “harmless” ones can create trouble if they show up year after year. That’s why it’s smart to have an arborist check things out whenever you notice recurring leaf issues.
Trees are incredibly tough. They’ve evolved to survive in natural environments and handle everything from harsh storms to pests to other everyday threats. Some species have even adapted to recurring wildfires, growing thick bark and producing cones that only open when exposed to high heat.
But today’s Central Coast is far from the natural environment these trees were built for. The soil is often compacted and missing key nutrients. Non-native turf grasses steal moisture. Air and water pollution introduce toxins trees were never meant to cope with. Because of all this, trees need a bit of extra support to stay healthy in our modern landscape.
That’s where Adney Tree Service comes in. We understand these challenges and know how to give your trees the care they need. Whether you’re choosing new trees for a busy commercial property or looking for proper pruning on a residential lot, we can provide the right services to help your trees thrive.
Every property, job, and tree is unique, so we devise a custom tree-service plan for every client we help. However, we’ve developed a relatively consistent process over the years that helps ensure we provide the kind of service you deserve.
